CLUB-MED FARU - Guest Comments

Club Med has a long tradition of providing active holidays and superb food in a stylish setting. and that is what they have successfully done again here in the Maldivian Club Med (FARU), indeed with the addition of a special island atmosphere and superb underwater life.

The main public buildings in the center of the island have been entirely years ago after a fire destroyed the tall, sweeping, thatched roofs of the originals. Their replacements, though less of a landmark for passing Dhoani, are even more stylish. With their elegant lines, red tiles and shaped wood, they seem to reflect Old China. The interior decor - the objects d'art and comfortable seating - reflects modern European sensibilities.

This mix is not only seductive but also appropriate, in terms of the clientele who come here. In July and August the place is full of Europeans, with the French to the fore. From September to December, Japanese and other Asian nationals take most of the rooms. Then, in the high season from January to April, there is a mix of all the nationalities.

True to its name as a Club, part of the corporate philosophy is to bring people together, and the lonely island environment aids this. More effective still are all the organized fun and games during the day, the active water sports scene and the nightly participation shows. It should be said, however, that there is no longer the push to take part, but more of an "as you please" ideology.

Diving is among the popular sports here. There are three departure times a day, usually with three boats. It is not the place for undisturbed diving in small, quiet groups.  Hello Maldives Divers saw Whale Sharks on the outside of club Med, and among the other highlights is the "Victory Wreck".

The lagoon is too big for snorkeling, so boats are organized to take guests, 60 or 70 at a time, to local reefs.

The beaches are mostly very good; a bit patchy on the ocean (east) side, but uniformly broad and fine on the side facing inside the Atoll. And being a long island, there is plenty of space to take a quiet stroll or find an unused beach.

The 152 rooms are all the same and all in two-storey blocks' cream colored, smooth and rounded and easy on the eye. Inside too there are no sharp edges. You might feel you are in a cozy ship's cabin. some rooms have third beds in, but this isn't a place for small children, except in July and August. Teenagers, though, can have a fine time.
