maldives_islands_resorts_fesdu_restaurant_outside.jpg (13089 bytes)Earlier, when Fesdu was opened in 1978, they had a camping style. However, today the resort has gone through many changes and the latest renovation was in 1996. Now it is a much more controlled environment, yet it is still undeniably beautiful.

They do organize excursions on a weekly basis, and these excursions include "Half-day excursions" (to a resort and an inhabited island), and on a "Full-day excursion" (to a resort, inhabited island and an uninhabited island), one shopping trip, one snorkeling trip, a day fishing and a night fishing.

On top of the above normal selections, some couple of unusual choices are available. Such as; you may choose to go on a real Maldivian fishing Dhoani to try tuna fishing for the whole day, with a local crew. Also, there is a small, uninhabited island close by which you can book to be alone together for a day.

The evening entertainments are lively and go on longer than most, as guests enjoy the "free" booze. The diving fraternity, however, sometimes feel short changed as they cannot drink too much and go diving the next morning.

Those that do get up to dive don't have to go far for their sport. The house reef itself has a great wall dive with octopus and rays, stone fish and lion fish, good coral cover and much more. Just a few minutes away is a coral outcrop with turtles and lobsters, and there is a great wreck dive a few minutes beyond that. Further on again is a site with some of the best cave diving in the Atoll.

Naturally the beaches tend to shift around the island with the two monsoons, but here (again) a big effort is made to keep the beaches in place all  year round. That means groynes (which are plentiful but not obstructive), sand dredging (from lagoon and beach), and/or walls (none here any longer).

Behind the fine beaches is a sandy path traveling around the island in front of the bungalows. This is a lovely walk-in itself as planted flowers bloom all around under towering coconut palms. Though you probably wouldn't notice it, you are restricted to this perimeter, unable to go "inside" the island.

There are 60 rooms. 54 are individual, thatched, wooden bungalows. There is also one block of 2 rooms and one block of 4. Though the blocks are less attractive outside, the interiors are identical. Smart and clean, they have air conditioning but no telephone or minibar.

maldives_islands_resorts_fesdu_buildings.jpg (13181 bytes)The other buildings on the island are just as attractive to look at. Thatch on top, wood on the sides and sand on the floor. The interior decor is not up to the same standard, but nobody seems to mind that. There are 7 buffets during the week (3 lunch and 4 dinners), the rest is set. We cannot say the food is particularly good, but if you are not a gourmet it will suffice.

Germans account for two thirds of the guests and British the other one third. On this pretty island everyone felt they had made the right choice.
