maldives_islands_resorts_reethi_rah_island_resort_front_view1.jpg (12371 bytes)Reethi Rah, is an old resort with a "Local Island" feel. There is a charm to the natural appearance of the island. But there is also an edge of in attention and disrepair. Still, the lagoon and the windsurfing are pretty good.

Though you may feel that the beaches and the island itself a bit old - due to the lack of environmental-friendliness of the management. Thus the island is targeted for low-budget holiday makers.

Further on this island the guests may not see the good aspects and the real beauty of the islands of Maldives; unlike Coco Palm, Palm Beach, Sonevafushi, Filitheyo, etc, etc.

Occasionally the thick vegetation reaches down close to the water, but this only creates smaller, private stretches of beach. The lagoon floor, too, is all soft sand.

The other side of the island is another story. A line of pitted coral rock runs the whole length of the island. It is not attractive but it protects the very narrow beach from the battering currents of the open sea. there is room enough to draw up a deck chair and enjoy a quiet time. The only things visible on this side are the coffee shop on stilts and the Water Bungalows at the north end.

The lagoon around the whole island is very large and sandy bottomed. This makes it ideal for swimming and water sports. Windsurfing, for beginners in particular, is understandably popular. On the other hand, the snorkeling is pretty hopeless. Even if you reach the reef edge it is still recovering from an old crown-of-thorns star fish infestation. Diving, in the region, however, is still excellent, with many renowned sites in the large channel to the north, especially the Protected Marine Area of Makunudhoo Kandu.

Opened way back in 1970's, the resort looks like a more a purpose-built resort. There are actually few coconut palms but the vegetation is dense overhead and the atmosphere is cool and shady. The fallen leaves are swept into the undergrowth and a lilly-lined path leads you through.

Being neglect works well with nature but not so well with man-made structures. The bar and restaurant, at least,   could do with redecoration and the rooms could do with a refit. It is unpretentious and you don't pay top money for a holiday here, but still, so many other resorts are getting smarter all the time.

Of the 60 rooms in total, 10 are Water bungalows. These are a bit more expensive and don't have good snorkeling, but they are near a beach and they are larger, brighter and newer than the beach bungalows. The latter are solidly built and separate, but the fixtures and fittings inside are really showing their age. Although a fridge and telephone have been put in, there is no A/C or hot & Cold Water and the overall decoration is not what you might expect. Furthermore the management are none too concerned.

Looking on the bright side, you don't spend long in your room. The really important things are good: the water is crystal clear and the beach is terrific.
