Rihiveli is a gorgious
resort with a distinctive French look and a cultured ambience. Alone on
the southern tip of South Male' Atoll, the secret of the island's charms,
it seems, is jealously kept by the discerning couples who have discovered
it, and return year after year after year.
The prices over here are on the
bit higher side - though this place gives you a feel far from the modern day
hotel concept. And the island has only 1 category of rooms - that is the
Standard Rooms. |

Of course, mostly people mix it, and for
this Rihiveli is excellent. At any time, guests can pick up a windsurfer,
canoe or catamaran, and even go water-skiing. Each day there are two free
trips to one of 15 local snorkeling sites. In the evening, table tennis
competition, and the like, are regular events, Parasailing, Game Fishing and
a variety of excursions are also organized.

This is an NOT an All-Inclusive resort in
the best sense. And as to the
restaurant (built over the water), the Full-board arrangement includes a good choice of
buffets and barbecues as well as an A La Carte menu. you don't even have to turn up at the
restaurant for lunch, you can wade out or canoe to the neighboring desert island and
there, everyday at 1 O'Clock, a barbecue lunch is served. |

In fact there is not one but two
small, uninhabited islands within Rihiveli's vast lagoon. Shallow and sandy, it is not a
perfect lagoon, but a platform is moored in the deeper water for water skiing, a
"swimming pool" has been dredged nearby and the snorkeling trips make up for
the lack of a reef.

Protected by this lagoon (and a few
groynes), the beaches are excellent around the whole island. Set back and shaded by
sculptured bushes, but still in view of the sand and water, are the 48 rooms, two to a
"cottage".

 Simplicity and elegance are the key words
here, obvious from the moment you first walk along the jetty: sandy, irregular but solid,
with grasses sprouting along the edge like a French country lane. The resort's central
focus is the beautifully designed bar/lounge and games room building. With echoes of the
south Pacific, the high thatched roofs slope sharply and reach low to the ground around
the open sides. Inside it is cool, shady and comfortable.

The south Pacific flavor
is taken
further (perhaps a tad too far for some tastes) with the blowing of a conch shell to
announce meals, and a tame parrot at the bar who sings the first phrase of the
Marseillaise. A distinctly western touch is the playing of classical music onto the beach
outside the bar at sunset every day, as guests to enjoy a sundowner. |
