What can I order on board? A tailor-made catering…

The answer is simple because you can order anything you want. The dishes are prepared on the ground, by caterers or air catering specialists. They can design simple and gastronomic menus, using local, organic and seasonal products. You can also ask them for typical dishes from your region or country.

As for drinks, the offer is unlimited: champagne, wine, beer, soda or fruit juice are available.

From caviar, often appreciated by businessmen, to the traditional kebab preferred by footballers, we are here to meet all requests, even the most extravagant.

Can we eat the same kind of dishes in all private jets?

The menus, although customizable, vary slightly depending on the private jet you choose. Indeed, light and ultra-light private jets, such as the Phenom 100 or the Pilatus PC-24, do not always offer the possibility of reheating food.

However, the cooks adapt to your requirements to offer you cold dishes of high quality. Larger and more functional private jets, such as the Gulfstream G550, or VIP aircrafts such as the Boeing Business Jet, have few restrictions.

PRIVATE JET HIRE COST?

This is our most frequent question, the permutations are vast – how many people, how much luggage and how far you are going will determine the right aircraft type for you. Where you are flying from and where you are flying to will determine where we source that aircraft, and how long you are staying will dictate if the pricing is based on a one-way flight or a round-trip flight.

As you can see – a lot of factors! Here are some links to guides on our website to get you started:

PRIVATE AIRCRAFT CHARTER PRICES TO THE MALDIVES.

“One Way” prices include the costs of the aircraft flying back empty.

Shorter return trips of up to approximately 2 – 5 days (depending on length of flight) will only be marginally more than a one-way cost as operators will likely layover at the destination airport thereby only occurring overnight and crew costs. However, once the return flight goes over a 4 or 5 day duration then pricing will be based on 2 x one ways.

The actual private jet cost hire prices to the Maldives may vary 10-20% from those stated below, depending on availability, wind direction, fuel prices, number of passengers & combined weight of luggage, so please do call us on + (960) 7783665  or write to us for up-to-date aircraft pricing information.

Fun Facts you should know about Air Cargo

Flying was one of mankind’s first dreams. Since this dream was brought to the real world and air transport became one of the most sophisticated and organized modes of transport. Air transport is, also, the most recent mode of transport created. Almost everything related to air transport has been documented. Therefore, it would be good to know some of the interesting facts about air cargo.

The first Air Cargo Flight ever?

The first flight ever recorded carrying cargo took off on November 7th, 1910 between Dayton and Columbus, OH. It was a distance of around 100 km (65 miles) and carried a single shipment of 90 kgs (200 lbs) of silk for a store opening. Even though the distance wasn’t much but it took a little over an hour to reach the destination. The plan used in this flight was the “Model B” invented by the Wright Brothers. It was in a race against an express train. Guess who won?

However, the first international Air Mail flight was one year later in 1911 between India and the United Kingdom. Airfreight transport was not regular and was done by commercial air cargo companies till after world war II when the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was formed. The movement was by passenger aircraft. It was till 1968 that the cargo aircraft only CAO was operated by the international air freight companies with the launch of the Boeing 747 with a capacity of more than 100 tons.

A good part of the global trade moves by Air

As published by the International Air Transport Associations (IATA), the international air cargo companies have moved around 62 million tons in 2019. In 2020, even with the COVID-19 effect on global trade, still, the air freight companies managed to cross the 62 million tons.  This forms more than one third of the global trade.

Sea Freight Services

Why ship by sea? Moving cargo by transportation is the longest running method of transportation. It is the most economical way to ship heavy cargoes a long distance, and the most versatile. Globitex sea freight platform focuses and specializes in the movement or forwarding of merchandise or cargo from one place to another by water transport.  Ocean freight includes boat or vessels, transporting commodities by sea.

Why Ship via Sea Freight?

When you have large quantities of goods that need to get to their destination in a timely and efficient manner, sea freight is the most cost effective and streamlined way to ship. In fact, sea freight, also known as ocean freight, is how 90 percent of the goods we buy get to where they need to be — and it’s cheaper than you think, especially for heavy cargo that is prohibitively expensive to ship via other means.

By using large container ships that pile on hundreds of standardized intermodal shipping containers, shipping carriers such as Maersk Line, CMA CGM, Hapag Lloyd, Evergreen Marine, COSCO and others are able to transport goods, machinery and other items at a reasonable cost and under a fast and efficient timeframe. But unless you’re a large-scale manufacturer or import/exporter, you won’t be able to deal with these huge, international shippers directly.

That’s where we come in. By working directly with the shippers that power our world’s commerce, we can arrange for as little or as much space and weight as you need to get your goods where they need to go via sea freight, and it all comes with up-to-the-minute tracking and competitive pricing that makes financial and logistical sense to both your business and your bottom line.

Customs Brokerage Resources

Getting the right details and making sure that all documents processing and applications are following the government’s regulations can be a little complicated. Therefore, you will need to get back to some parties or lists to make sure everything goes as per the book. Such as choosing the right HS Code; which is a short form for the Harmonized System Code (or The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System), filling the wrong HS Code in the customs application for import or export, will make the process harder and could result into delays and higher costs.

Also for some commodities, special requirements and approvals may need to be obtained before the arrival of your shipment. Like the MFOR, MNDF, MFDA, or in some cases when the shipment is coming for military or other government departments, it may be required to get special approvals from these authorities or shipment may be rejected or subject to higher customs duties or taxes.

In other cases having shipments coming or going based on a certain trade agreement background such as NAFTA may require a special process to be made.

Customs Brokerage Services for sea freight

Of course, all the services provided by a customs broker, especially in sea freight, are related to customs processing. If a shipment is coming into a country, the import customs clearance will need services like :

  • Helping shippers meet the customs department requirements for import clearance. Some commodities will require special approvals and documentation like pharmaceutical products, or some audio and video equipment, … etc. For the shipment to be cleared smoothly with no challenges, or extra costs, it is important to have all documents prepared and ready to process
  • Fill in the required forms: Customs department works through forms and applications that deliver all the needed details about the shipment being cleared. For example in sea freight, it’s good to know the shipping line, bill of lading number, container number(s), … etc. This is of course besides other basic information like the description of the goods being shipped, HS Code, the value of the cargo, plus other details. Providing the wrong input may lead to higher customs duties or even penalties. In some cases, it may be considered smuggling.
  • Review all the commercial, shipping documents and make sure all the documents and filled applications describe the real shipment and that they comply with the government regulations.
  • Process all payments for the government and sometimes to sea freight carriers such as customs duties, taxes, storage fees, penalties, .. etc.
  • Some traders will seek the customs broker’s advice to expand into new markets and learn more about market conditions and challenges.

Definition of Hazardous Material

All Hazardous Materials’ definitions agree on one main fact. That is the hazardous materials – or Dangerous Materials (DG) – are items that are capable of posing a threat to health, safety, property, or the environment.

This definition gives an impression that shipping this kind of material is more difficult on an aircraft than by sea or land. Especially, when there are passengers around. The airlines have very strict restrictions on how and what to ship hazardous materials. Therefore, most shippers tend to move them by land or sea freight. Also, since the underlined word here is “hazardous/dangerous” then it makes sense that shipping such materials in consolidation with other types of cargo is not an easy or even possible option.

There are general groups (CLASS NUMBERS) that classify all kinds of dangerous goods :

CLASS 1 : Explosives : This includes any material that can detonate as a result of a chemical reaction this class is broken down into six “sub-class” or “sub-division” for things such as airbags, fireworks, .. etc.

CLASS 2 : Gases : It is broken down to 3 sub-divisions (flammable gases, non-flammable gases, toxic gases). It includes all the types of gases that are compressed or material that is completely gaseous at a standard atomic pressure.

CLASS 3 : Flammable Liquids : This includes either flammable liquids that are with a flash point temperature of no more than 60.5 C or any material in a liquid status that is with a flash point temperature of no more than 37.8 C.

CLASS 4 : Flammable Solids : There are three sub-divisions under CLASS 4 that includes ; flammable solids, Spontaneously Combustible (flammable when in contact with air), and Dangerous when wet.

CLASS 5 : Oxidizing Material, and Organic Peroxides : It is clearly only two sub-divisions; Oxidizing Material which is the material that can contribute to or cause combustion by yielding oxygen as the result of a chemical reaction (such as Bromine). The Organic peroxides are organic compounds containing the peroxide functional group (such as methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) which is used as a catalyst in manufacturing polyester resins.

CLASS 6 : Toxic and Infectious Substances : These are poisonous materials (not in the state of gas) that are toxic to human beings and can result in health hazard during transportation. Class 6 has two sub-divisions (Poisonous Material, and Biohazards)

CLASS 7 : Radioactive Material : These are materials that cause radiation that is harmful during the transportation process ( such as

CLASS 8 : Corrosives : Such material will result in full destruction of human skin if a contact happens for a certain period (such as Sodium Hydroxide)

CLASS 9 : Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials : This class here will welcome any dangerous goods that do not fall under any of the other Classes (such as dry ice, lithium ion batteries, .. etc.)

Shipping Hazardous Materials by Sea

The most important steps in shipping hazardous materials by sea freight are Packing and documentation.

Packing dangerous goods is different than normal items. There are different standards and packing materials for different dangerous cargoes. Also, packing standards are different in air than in sea freight. Therefore, it is always better to get back to experts and certified people to assist with this part.

Documents also may differ based on the commodity and the mode of transport. However, it is important to always have at least the normal commercial documents (invoice, packing list, certificate of origin) with a DG Certificate (or DG Declaration) which describes what the material actually is and under what class it falls. Also, there is the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) that describes all details, substances, and usage of the items.

Penalties for Noncompliance When Shipping Hazardous Materials

Like any other part of the shipping industry, transporting HAZMAT without fulfilling all the requirements in packaging, documentation, declaration, and other shipment preparations may lead to very expensive fines. In some countries, it isn’t clear what the fines will be. On the other hand, counties like the United States have a clear table of fines that will reach a 6 figures number.

Instructions for Shipping Hazardous Materials

  1. MSDS ( Material Safety Data Sheet): This can be a good point to start the document preparations. Having a complete and properly filled MSDS will assist to know if the cargo is actually dangerous or not. It will also assist the carrier (airline or shipping line) in the decision to accept and estimate the cost of shipping it on board.
  2. If the cargo is confirmed to be falling under the dangerous goods category. It is a best practice to have a certified personnel check it and prepare it follow up on the preparation process to ship it. The basic knowledge should include safety and security measurements and more knowledge about shipping procedures and requirements.
  3. Decide the Class number and UN Number ( United Nation Number) which specify more accurately what is the cargo and what does it need.
  4. Based on the Class and UN numbers, decide what is the proper packaging material and process to make sure the cargo is completely safe to ship by air or sea freight.
  5. Do the right marking and labeling for the cargo : use the prepor DG label with the right class number and other labels to describe more details such as shipping document reference number (Bill of Lading or Air WayBill), the total number of pieces, shipper, consignee, origin, and destination.
  6. Fill out all the required applications by the customs department at origin to finish the documentation part.
  7. Book the space on the desired airline or shipping line and your shipment is ready to be moving.

Sea freight is the most commonly used mode of transport around the world with an estimated 80% of the global trade being moved by sea. With this being said, it is important to mention here that 60% of the sea freight movement is done through container boxes of different kinds. It was estimated that there are more than 530 million containers around the world in 2010 while there is an average of 17 million containers traveling around the world at any moment on board around 5,300 container vessels; most of them managed by the top 5 shipping lines (A.P Moller, MSC, COSCO, CMA CGM, and Hapag Lloyd).

Maldives Seaplane Transfer

The Maldives is more than 99% water with individual islands scattered across 90,000 square kilometres. Boats have been the standard transport for centuries, but they’re slow and not always ideal for weary travellers.

Enter the seaplane, or for you aviation aficionados, the float plane.

What is a seaplane? It’s exactly what it sounds like – a plane that takes off from and lands on water. Instead of tyres it has special floats like a boat hull. These planes usually carry up to 15 passengers.

Maldives has the largest fleet of seaplanes in the world!

What You May Need to Know

  • Maldives Seaplane is a water plane which Lands and takes off on the water.
  • Maldives Seaplane operates during day time only between 6:00hrs to 15:30hrs. ( Due to Maldives aviation regulations)
  • No toilets are available at the seaplane
  • No business class seats are available. But private luxury seaplanes has business class.
  • All international flights land after 15:00hrs passengers have to overnight in Male, Hulhumale or airport hotel and take flight (seaplane) on the next  day to the resort island.
  • Maldives Seaplane transfer is not cheap.
  • Maldives Schedule seaplane Baggage allowance per pax is total 25kg Free. Extra baggage charge $20+ up to total 35kg ( updated on Jan 2024)
  • Schedule seaplane bookings you need to wait at seaplane terminal estimate 1 to 4 hours
  • Checking Gates closes before 1 hour mostly but the operator will wait for other passengers depending on an international flight. Some time gates will be closed before 20 minutes it depending on their operations.
  • No air conditioning at aircraft but there will be fans. Before take off the inside of the aircraft  salon is hot.
  • Maldives Seaplanes has small capacity of 15 to 19 seats.
  • In seaplane mostly 7 seats are available close to the window.
  • Some resorts do not have lounges at seaplane terminal, thus they will be using a common lounge. Though “Manta Air” has a paid lounge for everyone.
  • Seaplane terminal will have one cafe, local shop, smoking area and toilets.
  • “Free seaplane Transfer Maldives” kindly note there is no free transfer of seaplane, if its mention Free seaplane transfer this fee will be definitely included in your room or package price. The resort will be not operating the seaplane but they charter them from the operating company so this price will be included on their total price.
  • Seaplane terminal can be reached by bus or car only, which they will provide for free.
  • Private seaplane transfer , excursions , photo flight are available on request.

What is the price Maldives Seaplane Schedule to resorts in 2024/2025?

Seaplane Transfer which is schedule to resort is charter by resorts so on arrival the resort will be booking the seats for guest and will be charge at resort.

The price of a seaplane transfer varies by Resort-by-Resort. On average the transfer fee is US$ 290 to US$ 700 per person  (roundtrip).

Most of the very high luxury resorts which are far from Velaanaa international Airport will be charging around US$ 900 per person for both ways. For last-minute booking or direct from seaplane airline company price will be higher than the resort offered price.

Seaplane Operators

There are currently two seaplane operators in the Maldives. Trans-Maldivian Airways (TMA), Manta Air  and relative newcomer Maldivian (which is a Maldives government operation). The largest is TMA which now has 61 planes. Some may remember Maldivian Air Taxi, which has since merged with TMA.

Resorts typically work with a single operator so you won’t be able to choose a specific seaplane yourself, but don’t worry, there are far more similarities than differences between them.

The differences are primarily in the seaplane terminals rather than the planes themselves, with better facilities offered by more expensive resorts.

A basic service may only include a simple waiting area whereas a premium service could include resort-exclusive lounges with comfortable seating and complimentary food and drink. As said above, Manta Air offers a lounge you can purchase entry to even if not included by your resort.

Is a Seaplane Transfer Worth It?

We go into more detail in seaplane vs speed boat but in short, yes if you are staying outside the Kaafu Atoll (which includes North Malé and South Malé atolls). Within the Malé area a speed boat is faster and easier.

The surrounding regions are ideal with beautiful 20-60 minute flights which give you an incredible birds-eye view over the Maldives. For the most remote areas of the Maldives it is necessary to take a domestic transfer to a nearby airport followed by a boat transfer to your resort.

It’s still possible to experience a seaplane in the Maldives even if you don’t take a transfer to your resort. At least one seaplane operator offers quick 10-minute photo tours around the Malé region.

How Long Does a Seaplane Transfer Take?

Transfer times depend which atoll your resort is located in.

Approximate flight times from Malé to different atolls in the Maldives:

  • 20-30 minutes
Vaavu, North Ari / South Ari
  • 30-45 minutes
Baa, Faafu, Lhaviyani, Meemu, Raa, Dhaalu, Noonu
  • 45-60 minutes
    Thaa, Shaviyani
  • 70-80 minutes
    Haa Alifu / Haa Dhaalu
  • Not available due to distance
North Huvadhu, South Huvadhu, Gnaviyani, Addu

You’ll also have a short wait at the seaport terminal prior to boarding your flight. This can be anywhere from 10 minutes to a couple of hours depending on factors such as when your international flight lands, the seaplane schedule, and prevailing weather. The longer waits are typically associated with poor weather. It’s best to see this time as part of the experience where you can enjoy a close up view of the seaplanes and take a moment to relax between your flights.

Are Seaplanes Safe?

Yes, seaplanes in the Maldives are safe. The country has the largest seaplane fleet in the world and attracts the most experienced seaplane pilots from around the world.

To verify this we reviewed records from the “Maldives Civil Aviation Authority” going back to 1994, where the records begin. Please CLICK-HERE  to see the details.

According to investigation reports there has never been a fatality arising from a seaplane crash in the Maldives. There was a single event involving a serious injury to the pilots and one passenger which occurred nearly 20 years ago in 2004.

In contrast there are hundreds of seaplane flights happening every day and millions of people have travelled safely on seaplanes in the Maldives.

For the Aviators

Floatplanes in the Maldives are nearly all de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otters equipped with modern Honeywell avionics and weather radar. Many are 300 series but 400S models – a floatplane optimized version of the standard 400 series – are increasingly common.

The 400s has twin PT6A-34 engines (PT6A-27s in the series 300) with constant speed props. The planes have a wingspan of 65 ft and seat 19 in a standard cabin configuration, though examples in the Maldives more often seat 15 guests + 1 crew, with the rear three seats replaced with additional luggage space.

Typical cruise speed is around 150kt and whilst a regular 400 series has a service ceiling of 25,000 ft most floatplane flights in the Maldives are short flights operated at 2,000-3,000 ft.

Some of the most impressive aviation happens on the “ground” – watching the captain (only the captain) parallel park a floatplane with the throttles is quite the sight to behold.

ATC services in the Maldives are provided by Maldives Airport Company Limited. The control tower is located on Hulhule Island next to Velana International Airport and the main floatplane harbour. Flights can be tracked live on the usual services such as Flightradar24 – lookout for the 8Q- Maldives registration prefix!

To be considered for First Officer position you’ll need a valid CPL with ATPL credit and apply for a Maldivian FCL. The bar for a Captain is significantly higher at 3000 ATPL hours including 750 with floats and 500 on type.

Seaplane Accidents Maldives

Seaplane Accidents - Maldives

Before we begin it’s worth pointing out that travelling by seaplane in the Maldives is safe. They have a great track record and accidents are rare.

Reports going back to 1994 indicate zero fatalities, and only one case involving serious injury.

Over this same period of time millions of people have travelled safely on seaplanes in the Maldives.

All aviation accidents and incidents are investigated by the AICC of the Maldives and we summarise all published reporting below. Whilst this may seem like a significant amount of material at a glance, keep in mind this covers 30 years of aviation!

Accident vs Incident

In aviation accidents are not the same as incidents, but both are reported and investigated to maintain high standards of safety.

Accidents involves at least one of the following: aircraft damage or structural failure, complete loss of the aircraft, or in exceptional cases serious injury or fatality.

Nearly all seaplane accidents in the Maldives receive this classification on the basis of aircraft damage rather than injury. None have involved a fatality.

Incidents are any events which affect or could affect the safety of operation. Serious incidents are those that had a high chance of leading to an accident.

Statistics

Over the period January 1994 to November 2023:

  • Total Accidents: 16
  • Total Serious Incidents: 3
  • Total Fatalities: 0
  • Total Serious Injuries: 3
  • Total Minor Injuries: 8

In 30 years of seaplane flights there have only been 11 injuries in the Maldives, of which 7 were crew.

In terms of tourists and passengers there have been just 4 injuries in 30 years, of which 3 were minor and 1 was serious.

Of the 16 accidents recorded 11 received this classified on the basis of aircraft damage rather than injury.

(P) – Preliminary Report

Summary of Investigation Reports

A complete overview of all investigation reports from the Maldives Accident Investigation Coordinating Committee involving commercial seaplane flights is presented below.

The first seaplane flights in the Maldives were in 1993 and proved to be significantly safter than the preceding helicopter flights which suffered much more serious consequences in accidents. By 1999 helicopter flights were practically eliminated as seaplane travel took over.

During this period there were very few seaplanes operating compared to today and only a limited number of flights. It’s not that accidents have become more common, there’s simply tens of thousands of flights more per year today.

The Maldives has made significant advances in safety and procedures over it’s 30 year history of seaplane flight. They now boast the largest seaplane fleet and arguably the most experienced seaplane pilots in the world.

2023

25th October 2023: 8Q-RAL

Serious Incident, no injuries.

Based on preliminary report.

Aircraft lost power in its right engine on approach to Malé at 350 feet, causing a sudden right turn and difficulty controlling the aircraft. Pilots were able to land safely on the water with a small bounce, and shortly after shut down the engines. Assisted by a rescue boat the aircraft taxied to a platform for passenger and crew to disembark.

16th May 2023: 8Q-TAQ

Accident, no injuries.

Based on preliminary report.

Aircraft encountered issues upon initial touchdown on water. The aircraft hit a swell during landing, causing a bounce, a drop of the left wing, and subsequent contact with the water. Once stationary, the crew assessed and confirmed damage to the left wing. The aircraft then taxied to a platform, shut down the engines, and passengers disembarked via the main door.

2021

13th November 2021: 8Q-MBC

Serious Incident, no injuries.

Based on preliminary report.

Take-off was aborted due to unexpected aircraft behaviour. Unable to stop, the aircraft shut down its engines and drifted into two water bungalows, sustaining damage but causing no injuries. The aircraft was then towed to a platform where passengers and crew disembarked safely.

14th February 2021: 8Q-RAE

Accident, 1 minor injury to cabin crew.

Flight from Maalifushi to Velana International Airport had an accident upon touchdown. The aircraft touched down on the right-hand float, dug into the water, and turned steeply right before coming to a stop inverted. Although the aircraft was substantially damaged, all six passengers and two pilots evacuated without injury; one cabin crew member sustained minor injuries.

2020

A rise in accidents coincided with global emergence from COVID restrictions. Planes and pilots had been grounded around the world without regular flying. This was not unique to the Maldives.

22nd October 2020: 8Q-TMR

Serious Incident, no injuries.

After a normal touchdown at Sun Siyam IruFushi, an aircraft experienced an uncontrolled left turn during reverse thrust, leading the left wing and propeller to contact an anchored vessel. The incident caused damage to the aircraft’s left wing and propeller blades, as well as to the vessel, but no one was on board the vessel at the time. The Pilot in Command regained control and taxied to a platform, with all passengers and crew disembarking safely without injuries.

5th October 2020: 8Q-TMF

Accident, 2 minor injuries.

During an approach with a left crosswind of about 20 knots at Velana International Airport, an aircraft landing on the ‘North Right’ area rapidly rolled to the right after touchdown, with the right wing dipping into the water. It swerved but settled upright on both floats. The aircraft was taxied to the dock with assistance from a rescue vessel and personnel onshore. All passengers and crew disembarked safely. Minor injuries were reported among the flight and cabin crew, but no passengers were injured.

24th February 2020: 8Q-MBC

Accident, 3 minor injuries including 1 passenger.

An aircraft landing on an unmarked water runway bounced upon touchdown, banked left, and then the right wing dropped, causing the nose to dig into the water. The Pilot in Command’s attempt to go around was unsuccessful. The fuselage, wings, engines, and propellers were substantially damaged, but the floats remained intact, and the aircraft was upright post-accident. It taxied to the mooring with left engine power and dinghy assistance. All occupants evacuated safely, with minor injuries to two crew members and one passenger.

2017

16th November 2017: 8Q-IAG

Accident, no injuries.

Aircraft encountered an accident during take-off from DOR water aerodrome. The aircraft hit a series of sea swells during acceleration, which resulted in both floats detaching and the nose plunging into the water. The engines were shut down by the PIC after the second impact. The detached floats, trapped under the wings, kept the aircraft afloat despite water entering the fuselage. All 12 passengers and 3 crew evacuated without injury.

4th October 2017: 8Q-ISB

Accident, no injuries.

The first officer was flying when the aircraft bounced during landing in a crosswind at Velana International Airport. The captain’s go-around attempt failed, causing the aircraft to flip and crash, landing upside down in shallow water. Despite substantial damage to the aircraft, all passengers and crew escaped without serious injuries.

27th May 2017: 8Q-TMV

Accident, no injuries.

During a landing on the North Right Water Runway, the aircraft bounced off the left float and then, after a second bounce, banked right causing the right wing tip to dip into the water. This led to an abrupt right veer and crash. All passengers and crew evacuated uninjured before the aircraft submerged.

2015

2nd July 2015: 8Q-MAN

Accident, no injuries.

During final approach to land at KUR, at about 400 feet with flaps fully down, the aircraft pitched up and vibrated uncontrollably as the stall warning activated. The PIC’s recovery manoeuvres initially failed, but some control was regained after retracting the flaps. Despite this, the aircraft continued a right turn, lost height, and hit the sea. All 11 passengers and three crew members evacuate uninjured before the aircraft sank.

2013

2nd August 2013: 8Q-TMK

Accident, no injuries.

During a westbound landing approach approved due to westerly winds, the aircraft banked left, losing control and touching down on the left float first. Control was transferred from the co-pilot to the Captain, who noted the aircraft’s significant left turn and wing damage. All passengers disembarked without injuries. The cause of the incident was identified as an unexplained left bank on approach despite facing a headwind.

2012

9th July 2012: 8Q-TMT

Accident, no injuries.

Upon landing, the crew struggled to dock at a fixed platform due to the tailwind and swells. After aborting the first docking attempt, the second attempt led to a collision with the platform when the aircraft moved forward despite full reverse and rudder inputs. The left float and propeller were damaged, and the aircraft eventually became fully submerged. All aboard evacuated safely.

9th February 2012: 8Q-MAT

Accident, no injuries.

On final approach to MLE the co-pilot made a hard landing on the north right water runway due to easterly winds, causing the aircraft to bounce and the right float to dig into the water. The PIC then took over and steadied the aircraft, but the right float detached and became stuck under the fuselage, preventing sinking, while the left float also detached. All aboard evacuated without injury.

2010

10th March 2010: 8Q-TMK

Accident, no injuries.

We were unable to retrieve report 2010-01, (“De Havilland, DHC-6-300, 8Q-TMK, Right wing struck on water at Cocoa Palm/Dhunikolhu Island Resort (Baa Atoll)”), at the time of writing.

2009

2nd June 2009: 8Q-MAG

Accident, 2 minor injuries including 1 passenger.

The aircraft took off from Halaveli for a 40-minute photo flight with good weather conditions. After take-off, the co-pilot gave his seat to a passenger and moved to the cabin.

Whilst CAR Part 15.11 does allow a special exemption for a passenger to take the right hand seat during professional photography flights, both pilots must be at the controls during take-offs and landing.

Once the shots were complete, the PIC began descending in a right bank, keeping the passenger in the first officer’s seat in order to provide further photography opportunities.

Before the PIC could complete the turn, the aircraft struck the water with its right wing/float. The crash broke both wings and detached the left float, while the right float jammed, blocking the co-pilot’s exit and twisting the empennage. All passengers and crew escaped without fatalities from the shallow wreckage.

The investigation attributed the accident to the PIC’s low flying, a passenger in the co-pilot’s seat, and the operator’s inadequate communication of procedural updates.

2008

14th July 2008: 8Q-MAS

Accident, no injuries.

The 8Q-MAS aircraft, with 17 people onboard, departed from Male to Adaaran Club Bathala. Encountering rough seas and strong westerly winds, it struck a swell on landing, veered left, and collided with a moored speed boat, losing its right float and engine. The aircraft sank in shallow water, but all on board safely escaped without fatalities.

2004

17th May 2004: 8Q-TMC

Accident, 3 serious injuries including a passenger, and 1 minor injury.

The most serious seaplane accident in the Maldives and one of the first, there were still no fatalities.

Departing from Male’ International Airport to Velaavaru Resort with 14 passengers, the aircraft experienced a longer-than-normal take-off, struggling to gain height. Nearing a seawall, the captain’s abrupt control pull to avoid the obstacle induced a stall, causing the left float to shear off upon impact with the seawall. This led to the left wing folding upwards and detaching, with the left propeller slicing through the cockpit ceiling. The aircraft then skidded across the ground, losing the right float and propeller, before halting on the mainland runway. The accident resulted in serious injuries to both pilots and one passenger, minor injuries to another passenger, while the rest were unharmed.

2001

19th February 2001: 8Q-TMA

The aircraft was manoeuvring on the water near the Floating Platform, after landing in the lagoon near Sun Island resort, when it struck another Twin
Otter that was parked against the floating platform. There were no passengers on either aircraft, and no injuries to any of the crew were reported.
